Crash
Calm, blue ocean
Window open
Breeze is blowing
And the waves keep crashing
They just keep crashing
They’re always crashing on us
Self-same ocean
Tempest growing
Always knowing
That the waves keep crashing
They just keep crashing
They’re always crashing on us
Is it really any better at all?
Is it really any better at all?
Is it really any better at all?
And the waves keep crashing
They just keep crashing
They’re always crashing on us

The Fall

The Fall
On any day
Each and every day the world’s a lottery
Billions left to make
Something of the prejudice and poverty
Where on the left are fake flights of fancy framed in ideology
Alongside fear and hate
Monetised, a lie as old as Man
Though we face the dawn
From atop the wall
When borderlines are drawn
You can’t delay the fall
And it takes
Everything we are and makes us enemies
Thunderous its praise
Resounds inside the echo chamber endlessly
And all is swept away
Reason surfs a tide of agnotology
Voices call to wake
But wilfully we slumber on, untrue
Though we face the dawn
From atop the wall
When borderlines are drawn
You can’t delay the fall

Flames and Rays
Feeling like I’m holding on too tight
Feeling like I’m holding on too tight
I sat you down; we watched the flames they tear away along the ground
A long way down
It holds me down below the sunlight’s rays where I’m chained
A long way down
In the end it’s only whispers
Butterflies and lonely whimpers
Still I sing a song of distress
And I never stop to breathe

Paper Rose

Paper Rose
Two stole an old boat
From stony shore to shining sea
And folded over
The paper creases carefully
Each holds the other
Into the air they throw a seed
The rose will open along the currents, free
And so the story goes
A lonely paper rose
Through stormy undertow
A world beyond control
Some nights I dream of
The dark and cold of ocean floor
On others I’m shown
A swift return to stony shore
And every now and then, I dream:
A tiny island in the sun
A beach of roses
I like that one
And so the story goes
A lonely paper rose
Through stormy undertow
A world beyond control

Sand
I followed an old man
Followed him into a strange land
Swallowed by oceans of white sand
Into the night
It’s all just sand
In my hand
And the fool in me
Does more demand
A promise of bounty
Found in a city of industry
"Float down the river", he told me
But don’t ask me why
It’s all just sand
In my hand
And the fool in me
Does more demand

Walls

Walls
I rise with no shine
Jogging a line between Myrtle and Park
The bottles of wine
No friends of mine, I won’t miss them at all
You’ll be a father in time
But where is that line and when do you discover
All of the secrets of life?
I know they’re not here in the cold
And I won’t know
‘Til the day it comes, oh
The city won’t show
Its walls have no ears
In bookstores and bars
No tales bizarre
I just hear whispers in corners
Search subway and chase down the evening star
I just burn ribcage and all
Where are the secrets you hold?
A city so old, bound in bricks, bones and silent
To all of the birds I must seem
A fool with his face to the wall
And I won’t know
‘Til the day it comes, oh
The city won’t show
Its walls have no ears
And I won’t know
‘Til the day it comes, oh
The city won’t show
Its walls have no ears
The city won’t show
The city won’t show
The city won’t show

The Last Wave

The Last Wave
Blue sky to the sea floor
I never asked for
This much to bite off, in spite of what you see
I shut my eyes off
My own jet fighter
The speed of light, out in a meteor storm
And when you’re asked
When time is up
Was it safer here
In a mind shut off
And when I wonder if there’s anything wrong
I know I’ll miss me when I’m gone
C4 on the blast door
In case I’m asked for
A world outside of which I’d vowed to never see
I step outside of
This old jet fighter
Too old to doubt my everything
And when you’re asked
When time is up
Was it safer here
In a mind shut off
And when I wonder if there’s anything wrong
I know I’ll miss me when I’m gone
But until the last wave comes ashore
You won’t know
Someone turned the light off
Someone turned the light off
And when you’re asked
When time is up
Was it safer here
In a mind shut off
And when I wonder if there’s anything wrong
I know I’ll miss me when I’m gone

Across the Sea
I don’t suppose you’re on your way
Could I convince you all to stay?
And you say
On and on and on it goes
But you can’t stay long
On and on and on it goes
And your faith is wrong
Come and sit across from me
Tell your tale, I’ll pour some tea
And you say
On and on and on it goes
But your faith is wrong
On and on
Hold on to the ordinary
Read my your obituary
Walk me through your cemetery
Maybe we all just float across a sea
Or maybe we’re all just stuck in a machine
I don’t know, I don’t care
It’s not like you’ve been there
On and on
A hope of gold a world of grey
I don’t propose you turn away
I won’t say
On and on and on it goes
That your faith is wrong
On and on
Hold on to the ordinary
Read my your obituary
Walk me through your cemetery
Maybe we all just float across a sea
Or maybe we’re all just stuck in a machine
I don’t know, I don’t care
It’s not like you’ve been there
On and on

Split Silhouette

Split Silhouette
Where the sky meets the road
Let the pink caress the gold
If only for a while
A little tired, truth be told
And though your fingers are cold
You take my hand and smile
Twist in the wind my butterfly
In the midst of the fading light, oh
How did it all come to this?
Where the trees greet the sea
I’ve never seen you look so free
A diamond in the sand
Forever warm inside your heart
A warmth withholding; a warmth apart
From your cold hands
Twist in the wind my butterfly
In the midst of the fading light, oh
How did it all come to this?
A split silhouette under Southern sky
We’ll grow old and dignified, oh
How will it all end?

Avalanche

Avalanche
A night in an alleyway
Hunched in the cold
A ride in an ambulance
I’m 19 years old
Scream down the mountainside
An ocean of snow
Riding the avalanche how fast you go
Dream you’re the only one
To rage against the storm
And all bitter days are won
When drowned anew
Hiding in memories
Smoking a bowl
Laughing at anything
I’m 30 years old
I once rode an avalanche
Out of control
I bear the scars
But wouldn’t change a thing at all
Dream you’re the only one
To rage against the storm
And all bitter days are won
When drowned anew
You set a course for the sun
But chose the cold below
You’re under a million tonnes of tundra snow
Dream you’re the only one
To rage against the storm
And all bitter days are won
When drowned anew
You set a course for the sun
But chose the cold below
You’re under a million tonnes of tundra snow

Fingertips/Dusk

Fingertips/Dawn
It’s cold
Fingertips around a bowl
Pins and needles
The morning sun
Slowly shifts behind the fog
I’d better go
Running on apathy, better force it out
Or I’ll float around ‘til dusk
I promised you everything
Metaphors and all that turns to rust
The feel
Fingertips behind the wheel
But you’re standing still
Start the engine, my friend
You’re better off just seeing where it ends
And the sun’s out again
Running on apathy, better force it out
Or I’ll float around ‘til dusk
I promised you everything
Metaphors and all that turns to rust
